Vuurdrager (Torchbearer). 2010 “In de Overtuin” (In the Far Garden), onsite in Veenhuizen. Organized by: Sjef Meijman. HOME - NEXT
“The Society of Humanitarianism was founded in 1818 to help poor families, many of them from the large cities, build a life as farmers on barren land in the Province of Drenthe. When it became apparent in 1823 that some of these people did not want to be ‘helped’ of their own free will, the society built the Veenhuizen penal colony. The inmates were all put to work and together they created a complete, closed-off society, with factories, an abattoir, a hospital and three churches. The Director of Veenhuizen could look out onto his Far Garden from the comforts of his lavish home. The penal colony has been open to outsiders since 1981.” Four visual artists and the band De Kift were invited to come tell their story to anyone who wanted to hear it.
